Leland After-School Tournament...
We are going to have our second after-school individual events scrimmage on Thursday, April 28. Weíre still new at this and welcome any suggestions and/or ideas. Here are some specifics:
Cost: none.
Location: Leland High School, 6677, Camden Ave., San Jose, CA 95120
Entry Limits: None. I donít think we are going to be getting a lot of people. We need to have a minimum of five schools to get NFL points for the students. A school may be represented by just one student.
Deadlines: Please email your entries by 4 PM on Friday, April 22. At that time, Iíd like an estimate of the number of judges youíll be brining. You can return your entries to Gay_Brasher@sjusd.org or to Gay.Brasher@gmail.com (that one wonít bounce).
Registration: 3:30 in J-2
Round 1: 4:00-5:15
Break: 5:15-5:30 (No food will be served. There are vending machines on campus. Iíll ask to have them filled that morning. Bring one dollar bills.)
Round 2: 5:30-6:15 We will keep judges in the same rooms for rounds 1 and 2 and ballots for round 1 will be collected by runners and ballots for round 2 will be distributed at that time. Round 2 judges will see a different event from what they judged round 1. This method will save time so we donít have to have judges move rooms.
Awards: Every student in the tournament will receive a certificate for the following levels: Superior, Excellent, and Very Good. Certificates and comment sheets will be mailed out within the week following the scrimmage. We will not hold the students here while we figure awards.
Judges:Please bring some. Experienced student judges are welcome. Do not bring adult judges. We will be using the rating system so we will be able to use the students in rounds, judging other students from their own schools. In other words, every student can be given a ranking of Superior. Needless to say, I hope to use several Leland judges in each round, but priority will go to judges from other schools.
Attire: Students may dress casually. We recommend a collar shirt for the boys with slacks and jeans for girls and guys.
Events: Students may enter and IE event. We may have to put like events together if enrollment is small. For example, domestic extemp and international extemp may be placed in the same round.
Divisions: Open to varsity, JV and Novice speakers but I would think that many of the contestants may be younger students. But since weíre doing ratings, the younger students will not be competing directly against the older students.
Benefits: In March, coaches spoke about wanting to get more rounds for their students. Hereís your opportunity to do so in a short fun, less-stressful format. Please email me any suggestions you may have for improvement.
